As you wander up the staircase into the first floor offices at London Broncos’ Trailfinders Sports Ground home’s pavilion, you find a picture of the team celebrating last season’s Million Pound Game hit.
It’s a reminder of how the Broncos overcame the odds to conquer Toronto Wolfpack in Canada in the 2018 marketing decider, along with how they got to this point in the very first area after needing to win both of their remaining games to produce the Qualifiers and again to reach the aforementioned decider.
Almost 12 months later, the group wind up needing two successes out of their two matches – this opportunity.
Broncos head coach Danny Ward is therefore aiming to use the experiences of the past year as his side enter territory.
„We’ve been in knock-out soccer scenarios before, we’ve had some must-win games and that is what experience for you,“ Ward stated.
„You have got to tap into that expertise, you know what it feels like and you know what it is going to require.
„We’ve got to draw on those experiences for your lads who had been in that Million Pound Game and show them the hard work we went through was for these minutes now.“
The first of those games is this Friday off to Hull Kingston Rovers, live on Sky Sports, and the Broncos head with won one and lost against the Robins far.
One man who knows all about what is currently waiting in store for your Londoners is Kieran Dixon, who spent two seasons before returning because of his second spell at 2017, playing.
Throughout this time that the winger scored 28 attempts together with the memories of acting and the derbies with cross-city rivals Hull FC.
„This was much different to what I am utilised to,“ Dixon explained. „Clearly I had a good deal of growing up to do, leaving here and going up there.
„I was in my and still young – maybe not that I grew up a lot, but I grew up only enough – but the stunt had been amazing.
„To proceed from here, where you have got a true fan-base although not the biggest, to playing in a scene with six or 7,000 people weekly was eye-opening as well as the very first Hull Derby was some thing I will never forget.
„They were amazing games and I am glad I played in a few of these, but I’m glad to return home now.“
Ward will find himself up against one of his former classmates in Hull KR head coach Tony Smith, who was responsible at Leeds Rhinos when the Broncos boss had been making his way as a youthful prop in Headingley.
Smith has made three adjustments to Rovers’ 19-man team off to Catalans Dragons which raised the team two points clear of this Broncos.
Victory on Friday will protect the Yorkshire side’s place and would be the perfect way for Smith to top off a week which saw him agree a fresh three-year contract with the club.
„He is a fantastic trainer, most likely one of the greatest I’ve worked with,“ Ward explained. „He was tremendous for my match coming through at Leeds, he helped me and he’s a quality coach.
„He’s certainly brought some stability there and they’ve obviously seen a lot of development because he’s just signed a new contract, which is terrific for both Hull KR to understand where they are likely to be using Tony and I’m sure he will continue to push them to become one of the top clubs.
„But hopefully we will find the task done Friday night“
Ward has made only one change to the Broncos’ 19-man group together with Daniel Hindmarsh substituting Mark Ioane.
