Longtime Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen passed away Thursday at age 75 following a protracted struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Super Bowl-winning quarterback Peyton Manning shared that Bowlen’s push to win convinced him to sign with Denver after his time in Indianapolis ended. Manning voiced his gratitude to the late owner in a statement issued Saturday.
„My deepest sympathies go out to the entire Bowlen family,“ Manning explained. „I met with Mr. Bowlen for the first time when I played for the Indianapolis Colts and that I was in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl if he was also there in his Hawaiian home. I saw him a few times throughout the years and had brief, short conversations with him that I actually enjoyed.
„Coming to play here for Denver, though his health was declining, I did enjoy a few conversations with Mr. Bowlen. I was here a whole lot in the offseason. The moment I signed with the Broncos, I was basically living at the facility — studying film, rehabbing and working out. I was usually among the last to depart the facility during this time. I say,’I thought I had been the last to leave,’ but Mr. Bowlen was there. He would normally be in the training area on the elliptical, and I’d go in there and have conversations with him. He had been asking me if we found a place to live yet, and I remember once I told him we found a place to live, he said he used to live right near there, and we spoke a bit about that. Just brief, brief conversations, and that I enjoyed that time with him.
„It was an honour to perform Mr. Bowlen’s organization, as I’ve said several occasions. I always had great respect for the Denver Broncos during my time playing with the Colts competing against his organization. So much of that credit goes to Pat Bowlen and his wish to be the very best and to win. That had a lot to do with me signing with the Denver Broncos — that I understood Mr. Bowlen was about winning and I knew the people that he had hired could carry on that tradition and legacy. It was a fantastic decision to come play here — we live here today. I’m thankful for Mr. Bowlen and the legacy He’s created with the Broncos, in the NFL and certainly in this Denver community. Many will miss him. It was an honour to understand Mr. Bowlen and also a real pleasure to have played for his group — the Denver Broncos.“
Bowlen will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame together with the 2019 class this August at Canton, Ohio.
